If you’re searching for a refreshing, healthy drink that’s both delicious and easy to make, look no further than Strawberry Chia Seed Tea! This delightful beverage combines the subtle flavors of tea with the fruity sweetness of strawberries and the nutritional boost of chia seeds. It’s perfect for a summer day or a cozy afternoon.

KEY INGREDIENTS

  • Tea bags: a light or floral tea works best. See my notes below on alternatives to tea bags and a list of plastic-free teas. THIS is the one I used. It’s delicious!

  • Chia seeds: a naturally good source of fiber, protein, and omega-3s!

  • Honey or maple syrup: optional, to taste

  • Strawberries: Because this is strawberry chia seed tea after all!

HOW TO MAKE STRAWBERRY CHIA SEED TEA

The full recipe for this strawberry chia seed tea is below in the recipe card, but here’s an overview of how to make it:

  1. Boil the Water: Start by bringing a pot of water to a boil on your stove.

  1. Steep the Tea: Once the water has boiled, turn off the heat and place the tea bags in the hot water. Allow them to steep for about 5 minutes, or follow the steeping instructions on the package for the best flavor.

  2. Cool the Tea: After steeping, remove the tea bags and let the tea cool to room temperature. This step can take about 2 hours, but it’s important to let the tea cool properly to prevent the chia seeds from clumping.

  3. Prepare the Chia Seeds: Transfer the cooled tea to a pitcher. Add the chia seeds and stir vigorously.

  4. Chill the Tea: Place the pitcher in the fridge and let it chill until it’s cold. The chia seeds will expand!

  5. Add Strawberries and Sweetener: Just before serving, stir in the chopped strawberries and your choice of sweetener, like honey or maple syrup.

  6. Serve and Store: Serve your Strawberry Chia Tea over ice for an extra-refreshing experience. Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to 2-3 days.

A NOTE ABOUT MICROPLASTICS IN TEA

I love drinking tea on a (nearly) daily basis. Like many of you, I’ve been shocked by the recent research that shows that people who drink tea are continuously dosing themselves with billions of plastic particles (source). Although the full health risks are unknown, consuming these plastic particles may have dangerous health consequences that we don’t yet realize.

HOW TO AVOID MICROPLASTICS IN TEA

Because of this, I strongly encourage you to do your research and choose a tea brand that does not use plastic tea bags, or glues in their tea bags. And trust me, you can’t tell if a tea bag is plastic or not just by looking at it—the majority of them are, even if they look like paper or cloth. I used to think they were all paper!

Better yet, use loose leaf tea! This way you completely avoid plastic altogether. If you choose to make this recipe with loose leaf tea, simply place the tea in a metal tea ball and steep it in the hot water. Follow the rest of the recipe as instructed.

LIST OF BRANDS THAT DO NOT USE PLASTIC TEA BAGS

Here are a few tea brands that do not use plastic in their tea bags (source):

  • Traditional Medicinals

  • Pukka

  • Republic of Tea

  • Numi

  • Stash

  • Yogi

  • Tetley

  • Lion’s

STRAWBERRY CHIA SEED TEA TIPS

  • Tea Choice: I love how this strawberry chia seed tea tastes with a floral or fruity tea. I used Republic of Tea’s Hibiscus Tea for this recipe, and it tastes delicious! Feel free to experiment with different types of tea to find your favorite.

  • Chia Seeds: For a thicker texture, you can use more than 3 tablespoons of chia seeds. Just remember that the more seeds you use, the thicker the tea will become. I find that 3 tablespoons strikes a good balance without being too dense.

  • Strawberry Variations: If strawberries are out of season, you can use frozen strawberries. Other fruits like raspberries or blueberries would also work well for this recipe if you want to mix things up!

HOW TO STORE THIS CHIA SEED TEA

Keep this tea in the refrigerator. The tea should stay fresh for about 2-3 days.

WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A PITCHER?

If you don’t have a pitcher, you can use any large container or jar that you can cover and refrigerate. Just make sure it’s large enough to hold the tea and allows for easy stirring.

Strawberry Chia Seed Tea

Strawberry Chia Seed Tea

Strawberry Chia Seed Tea combines the subtle flavors of tea with the fruity sweetness of strawberries and the nutritional boost of chia seeds. It’s perfect for a summer day or a cozy afternoon.
Prep time: 10 MinInactive time: 4 HourTotal time: 4 H & 10 M

Ingredients

  • 2 tea bags*
  • 3 tbsp chia seeds
  • honey or maple syrup, to taste
  • strawberries, chopped

Instructions

  1. Bring water to a boil on your stove. The amount of water you boil will depend on the size of the pitcher that you'll store your chia seed tea in. You'll want one that holds at least 3 cups.
  2. Turn off the heat. Place the tea bags in the water and steep for about 5 minutes, or as directed according to package instructions.
  3. Remove the tea bags, and cool the tea to room temperature. This took about 2 hours.
  4. Transfer the tea to your pitcher for storage. Add the chia seeds, and give the pitcher a vigorous stir to incorporate the seeds so they're evenly distributed and don't clump together. A little bit of clumping is normal, though.
  5. Place the pitcher in the fridge to chill for at least 2 hours, or until cold.
  6. Add your chopped strawberries and sweetener to the tea just before you're ready to serve.
  7. Store in the fridge for 2-3 days.

Notes

*I used hibiscus tea for mine, but you can use any tea you'd like. I recommend a fruity tea for the best flavor. Also, try to pick a brand that does not use plastics tea bags. You can find lists about this online, but I used Republic of Tea because their bags are plastic-free and compostable.
