TELL ME MORE ABOUT THIS KEY LIME PIE BREAD

This key lime pie bread recipe exists because I’m a tiny bit obsessed with banana bread. My mom’s famous banana bread recipe is one of my most popular blog posts of all time, and it got me to wonder what other breads could be made with fruit.

The result: one of my new favorite summer snacks. Imagine if banana bread and key lime pie had a baby, that’s what you’d get when you make this key lime pie bread! There are no bananas in this recipe but the moist texture is very much there.

CAN I MAKE KEY LIME PIE BREAD WITH REGULAR LIMES?

The short answer is YES! You could make key lime pie bread with regular limes, however they won’t have that quintessential fresh, floral, fruity taste that makes key limes so unique. The reason why key limes and regular limes are different is that key limes are generally much smaller, and have a more tart and distinctly floral flavor that’s missing in traditional limes.

WHAT IF I CAN’T FIND KEY LIMES?

Here’s the thing… fresh key limes can be hard to find nationwide and year round. So, when I’m in the mood for key lime pie bread but can’t find key limes, I use Nellie & Joe’s Key West Lime Juice! I’ll include a photo of it here.

I found my bottle in juice section of my local Ralphs, close to the cocktail mixes. This stuff is essentially key lime juice in a bottle, and it’s perfect for making key lime pie desserts without needing actual key limes!

WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS?

  • Brown sugar for sweetness. I haven’t experimented with coconut sugar, but I think that should work as a substitute for this recipe, if you’re avoiding traditional sugar.

  • Butter, although Earth Balance butter is a great vegan butter option, too.

  • Fresh key limes are a key ingredient for this key lime pie bread recipe. If you can’t get your hands on fresh key limes, though, try this bottled juice alternative.

  • Buttermilk is used in this recipe, but you can use regular milk or make your own quick buttermilk if you don’t have it.

  • Vanilla, you can use any kind but I like to use my homemade vanilla, which you can find on my shop.

  • Flour, of course!

HOW DO YOU MAKE THIS KEY LIME BREAD LOAF?

This key lime pie bread is way easier to make than you’d think! Start out by preheating your oven to 350 degrees. Beat the butter and sugar together in a medium bowl until whipped and fluffy.

Next, add the eggs one at a time, beating after each addition. Add the key lime zest, juice, vanilla, and buttermilk, and mix until combined.

Sift the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt together. Mix it into the wet batter. Pour the batter into a loaf pan, and bake for 45-50 minutes until toothpick inserted comes out clean.

Meanwhile, combine the ingredients for the key lime glaze. Cool the bread completely before topping with the glaze.

HOW LONG DOES THIS BREAD LOAF TAKE TO MAKE?

In total, this key lime loaf takes about 15 minutes to prep and about 50 minutes to bake. So, from start to finish, this recipe will be completely finished in about one hour.
