Homemade Fruit Gummies
These healthy homemade fruit jellies couldn’t be easier to make! If you thought that making fruit snacks at home would be a huge undertaking, know that as long as you have fresh fruit, a blender, and a stove, then you can make your very own fruit snacks at home. The fun comes in when you start experimenting with the different fruits and flavors that nature has to offer!
My inspiration for this easy fruit snacks recipe comes from the fact that I used to love fruit snacks as a kid, but fruit snacks are generally loaded with sugar. Fruit, for the most part, is naturally sweet as it is, so I don’t think all that extra sugar needs to be added in order to make delicious fruit snacks. To make sure this homemade fruit jellies recipe tastes great when you make it, be sure to use fruit that is ripe and sweet.
The full recipe for these homemade fruit jellies are at the bottom of this blog post, but here are a few answers to common questions you may have.
How are jelly fruits made?
Believe it or not, making homemade fruit jelly isn’t an intensive process, especially if you’re working with just one type of fruit! I used strawberries, grapes, and mango for my homemade fruit jellies, so I had to repeat the process three times but you can certainly do less by only making one type of fruit.
Here is the gist on how to make these fruit snacks at home. The more detailed instructions are at the bottom of this blog post.
Start out by rinsing and peeling your fruit. Chop them into small pieces.
Place the fruit and apple juice in a food processor and blend until completely smooth.
Taste the fruit puree and add honey or maple syrup if it needs more sweetness. Blend again.
Pour the fruit puree into a small saucepan and sprinkle 3 tbsp of gelatin on top. Whisk together until the gelatin disappears.
Turn on the stove to medium and heat the fruit puree until it just starts to simmer on the edges. Stir often, making sure it does not burn. You do not want the fruit to boil, but it should start to simmer (this may take 2-4 minutes depending on your stove).
Pour the fruit puree into the silicone mold and place in the fridge for about 2 hours, preferably overnight. Pop the fruit jelly out of the mold and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Is gelatin vegan?
No, gelatin is not vegan. Gelatin is derived from animal collagen so this recipe will not be friendly for folks who avoid animal products–sorry! Some vegan-friendly gelatin alternatives include agar agar and carrageenan, however I have not tested those substitutions for this recipe so your mileage may vary.
Which fruits cause jelly not to set?
You can attempt this recipe with a variety of fruits, however pineapple, kiwi, and papaya should not be used because they contain an enzyme that prevents them from completely setting.
Which fruits can I turn into jelly?
That being said, you have so many different fruit options to use for this recipe! Apples, blueberries, strawberries, mango, grapes, peaches, and oranges could be great fruits to test for this fruit gummy recipe, plus so many more! You can even add blended veggies alongside the fruit to add a punch of multivitamins.
Do I need any special equipment to make these fruit gummies?
Yes. Before starting this recipe make sure you have a food processor or a blender handy.
You may also want to use a silicone mold so that the gummies can be enjoyed individually. However, you could also simply use a loaf pan or glass container and cut the fruit mixture into individual gummies, if preferred.
