WHAT IS HEARTS OF PALM?
Heart of palm is a white vegetable that comes from the core of certain kinds of palm trees. You can often find hearts of palm either in a can or packets near the canned vegetable aisle in your grocery store. It has a unique texture and flavor that pairs well with various sauces. When cooked and seasoned, it can taste similar to pasta which makes it a great low carb, gluten-free, low calorie alternative to traditional pasta.
HEARTS OF PALM PASTA BRANDS TO TRY
My favorite Hearts of Palm pasta is the one from Trader Joe’s! You can find it in the pasta aisle, near the seasonings and canned goods. I haven’t tried Palmini but I’ve read many positive reviews about it.
Both brands are only about 20 calories per serving, with 4g of carbs and 2g of fiber!

HOW TO MAKE CARAMELIZED ONION HEARTS OF PALM PASTA
The full recipe for this caramelized hearts of palm pasts is below, but here’s a quick overview on how to make it:
- Sauté the Hearts of Palm Pasta: Heat a skillet over high heat and drizzle in olive oil. Add the hearts of palm pasta and toss to coat. Cook for about 5 minutes, allowing it to heat through and absorb the oil’s flavor.
- Caramelize the Shallots and Garlic: Add in the remaining oil and butter, along with the sliced shallots and minced garlic. Season with salt and pepper. Cook on low for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the shallots are soft and golden. Remember, low and slow is the way to go for caramelization!
- Create the Sauce: Once the shallots are perfectly caramelized, season them and pour in the heavy cream (if using) and quickly mix it to create a creamy sauce. Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed—don’t be shy!
- Combine and Serve: Add the hearts of palm pasta back into the skillet. Toss everything together until the pasta is well-coated with the sauce. Serve hot, topped with freshly grated Parmesan cheese for that perfect finishing touch.

IS HEARTS OF PALM PASTA HEALTHY?
