These healthy chocolate covered granola bites are made with wholesome ingredients like toasted oats, almonds, pecans, almond butter, and maple syrup! Each granola ball is then dipped in a delicious, smooth dark chocolate shell. Easy to make, naturally sweetened, and perfect for snacking during the week, these healthy granola bites are simply irresistible.

WHY I MADE THESE CHOCOLATE GRANOLA BITES
I’m not here to say that these granola bites are better than any granola bar, but they’re definitely way more fun!
I made these chocolate covered granola bites because as much as I love a good granola bar recipe, sometimes I’m just in the mood for something more bite-sized, rather than an entire bar. A sweet, chocolatey bite that’s perfect as an after-dinner snack or dessert that satisfies that inevitable sweet craving.
And when the idea refused to leave my mind that’s when I knew it was about time for me to roll up my sleeves and make these healthy chocolate covered granola bites finally happen!
These toasty granola bites are made with wholesome ingredients like rolled oats, almonds, pecans, almond butter, maple syrup, and the warm fall spices of cinnamon and nutmeg. And then they get rolled through some melted dark chocolate and sprinkled with a bit of sea salt. That sweet-salty combo is just too irresistible to pass up, trust me!

If you love granola bars as much as I do, then you’re going to love these simple and delicious granola bites, too. They’re way more fun than a traditional granola bar. They can be made in less than an hour and they last in the fridge for a week so that you can have a couple of bites to snack on whenever you’d like.

CHOCOLATE GRANOLA BITES FAQ
1. Are these chocolate covered granola bites actually healthy?
In my opinion, yes! This chocolate dessert is made with whole food ingredients like whole-grain oats, nuts, chia seeds, and nut butter. Plus, they’re sweetened with maple syrup rather than refined sugar.
Be sure to use dark chocolate chips to reduce the overall sugar content (I prefer at least 70% chocolate rather than milk chocolate or bittersweet chocolate, which are sweeter). These granola bites are still a treat, so enjoy them in moderation, but they’re a more nutritious choice than most store bought granola bars.
2. Can I make this without nuts?
Yes! You can swap the almonds and pecans for pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds, and use sunflower seed butter in place of the almond butter.
3. Do I have to use almond butter or can I use a different nut butter?
You can use any nut butter you’d like, like peanut butter, cashew butter, or sunflower seed butter. Just choose a natural, drippy nut butter for the best result. Very thick or dry nut butters may not bind as well.
4. Is this recipe gluten free?
Oats are naturally gluten-free, but they’re often cross-contaminated with wheat during processing. To make this recipe gluten-free, look for oats that are labeled certified gluten-free.
Also be sure to double check the gluten free label on your chocolate chips.
5. Can I make these vegan?
Yes, just use dairy free dark chocolate chips.
6. My granola mixture is too crumbly. What should I do?
If your granola refuses to stick together, mix in a little more almond butter into the mixture, one tablespoon at a time, until the mixture holds together when pressed. Also be sure to press each ball firmly together in your hands so it’s compact before chilling.
7. Do I have to use coconut oil?
I recommend mixing coconut oil into your dark chocolate because it helps the chocolate melt smoothly and set with a nice snap. Without any coconut oil, the chocolate shell will be thicker and may be harder to dip.
8. Can I skip the food processor?
You can, but the texture of the granola ball will be chunkier. If you don’t have a food processor, instead you can finely chop the toasted nuts and oats by hand or use a blender, then stir everything together in a large bowl. The bites may be slightly chunkier.
9. What’s the easiest way to dip the granola balls?
Use two forks to lower each ball into the melted chocolate, turn it to over coat, then lift it out and let the excess drip off before placing it on the baking sheet. Keeping the balls cold from the fridge helps the chocolate set quickly on contact.
10. How should I store these?
I recommend storing the finished granola bites in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. They also freeze well. Just let the frozen bites thaw in the fridge or at room temperature before enjoying.

Healthy Chocolate Covered Granola Balls
Equipment
Ingredients
Granola
- 2 c whole-grain rolled oats
- 1/2 c almonds
- 1/2 c pecans
- 1/2 c almond butter or another nut butter like peanut butter
- 1/2 c maple syrup
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
Chocolate Shell
- 2 c dark chocolate chips
- 2 tsp coconut oil
- Sea salt for sprinkling, optional
Instructions
Granola
- Preheat oven to 325 F, and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Pour the oats, almonds, and pecans onto the baking sheet, spreading it out into a single layer.
- Toast in the oven for 20 minutes, tossing halfway through, until lightly golden in the edges.
- Transfer the toasted oats and nuts to a food processor.Keep the baking sheet and parchment paper handy.
- Pour in the almond butter, maple syrup, chia seeds, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Pulse together for about 1 minute, until the mixture becomes a fine, sandy texture with no large pieces.
- Use a cookie scoop or measuring spoons to scoop ~ 2 tbsp sized portions of the granola. Using your hands to press each ball together so it's nicely compact. You should get about 20 balls. The granola may feel a little bit loose at first, but it should still stick together pretty easily. If the granola is just too loose, mix in a bit more almond butter until you get the desired consistency.
- Place the balls back on the baking sheet, and chill in the fridge while you make the chocolate.
Chocolate Shell
- Melt the chocolate and coconut oil in a heat-proof bowl in the microwave or in a double boiler until completely smooth. If using the microwave, be sure to stop and stir the chocolate chips every :15s to prevent burning.
- Dip each of the granola balls into the melted chocolate, turning it around to coat, allowing any excess to drip off. I find this is easiest to do by lowering the balls into the chocolate using two forks, and using the forks to turn it.
- Transfer the dipped granola balls back to the baking sheet. Sprinkle the tops with sea salt, if using.
- Place in the fridge for at least 30 minutes, until harded.
- See blog post for storage tips.
