Flourless Chocolate Tahini Brownies

These flourless tahini brownies are fudgy, rich, and made with simple, wholesome ingredients like maple syrup, cocoa powder, and dark chocolate chips. Naturally gluten free and refined sugar free, they’re the perfect healthy chocolate treat when you’re craving something sweets. And you can make these in just 30 minutes!

WHY I MADE THESE CHOCOLATE CHIP TAHINI BROWNIES

The words tahini and brownies aren’t often used in the same sentence, let alone the same recipe. This isn’t my invention, but I thank the amazing person who decided that tahini and brownies do, in fact, go well together. Tahini forms the base for these rich, fudgy, and gluten free brownies, and it’s just too good not to share!

For this recipe, I was inspired by my Flourless Zucchini Brownies that I shared last year. I am so sold on the idea of making brownies that have no flour or refined sugar, yet still taste delicious. These chocolate chip tahini brownies are a riff on that original recipe (minus the zucchinis, of course), but using tahini as our base instead!

Why does tahini work so well as the base of this recipe? That’s because tahini, which is a paste made from ground sesame seeds, is naturally a good source of healthy fats creating a rich, moist batter, making it the perfect ingredient to use in brownies!

Note that the tahini flavor in these brownies is not super strong, so don’t worry about these brownies having an “odd” flavor or texture, I promise the only thing you’ll taste is chocolatey deliciousness. Nothing more, nothing less.

But if you want to top these with a sprinkling of flakey sea salt and maybe even a small scoop of vanilla ice cream, I won’t stop you. I might even encourage it!

GLUTEN FREE TAHINI BROWNIES KEY INGREDIENTS

The full ingredients list is in the recipe card below, so make sure to scroll all the way to the bottom to see what you need to make this recipe!

Here is a quick overview of what you need to make these healthy tahini brownies at home:

  • Tahini: The star ingredient and base of this recipe! Tahini replaces both the flour and butter used in traditional brownie recipes. It provides structure, moisture, and a rich, nutty depth of flavor while also contributing healthy fats. These brownies would be nothing without it!
  • Egg: Acts as a binder, holding the brownie batter together and giving the brownies additional lift and structure.
  • Maple syrup: Adds sweetness while also keeping the brownies moist and fudgy.
  • Vanilla extract: Enhances the overall flavor of the brownies and rounds out the richness of the chocolate and tahini.
  • Coconut sugar: A less refined alternative to white sugar that adds sweetness with a subtle caramel-like depth of flavor.
  • Cocoa powder: Provides the deep, rich chocolate flavor that makes these brownies taste amazing.
  • Espresso powder: Optional, but intensifies and deepens the chocolate flavor significantly! Highly recommended even if you’re not a coffee fan! These will not taste like coffee brownies, I promise you.
  • Baking soda: A leavening agent that helps the brownies puff up during baking, giving them a lighter texture.
  • Dark chocolate: Adds pockets of melted chocolate throughout the brownies for extra richness and indulgence! I recommend using at least 70% dark chocolate for this recipe.

HOW LONG DO THESE HEALTHY TAHINI BROWNIES TAKE TO MAKE?

This tahini chocolate chip brownie recipe is one of my easiest recipes yet! These wholesome brownies contain just a few ingredients, needs just one bowl and everything comes together quickly and easily.

The full recipe is below, but here’s the gist of it:

  • Mixing the batter together: 10 mins
  • Baking the tahini brownies: 20 minutes

In total, this gluten free tahini brownie recipe will take about 30 minutes total to make! How easy is that?

HOW TO STORE THESE GLUTEN FREE BROWNIES?

Store the cooled brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. I recommend keeping them stored at room temperature to prevent the brownies from drying out over time.

If you plan to enjoy these brownies for more than a few days, then move them to the fridge! They’ll keep fresh in the fridge for up to a week.

These brownies can also be frozen for up to 2 months. Just slice them first and stack them in layers separated with parchment paper.

CHOCOLATE TAHINI BROWNIES FAQ

1. What is tahini, and where can I find it?

Tahini is a paste made from ground sesame seeds, similar in texture to other nut butters like almond butter or peanut butter. Tahini has a rich, slightly nutty and earthy flavor. You can find it at most grocery stores in the peanut butter or international foods aisles. Look for a tahini that has only sesame seeds on its ingredient list, with no added oils, sugars, or salt.

2. Do these brownies taste like tahini, or sesame?

Not at all! The tahini adds a subtle nuttiness and richness to the brownies, while also making them moist. But the cocoa powder and dark chocolate are the dominant flavors here. You won’t taste too much tahini, I promise!

3. Why does my tahini need to be drippy and well-stirred?

Tahini naturally separates over time, with the oil rising to the top. This is why you should stir you tahini before you use it, otherwise your batter may turn out too dry or unevenly mixed. A drippy, well-stirred tahini ensures the batter comes together smoothly and that the brownies bake up with the best fudgy texture!

4. Are these brownies gluten free?

Yes, they are! Since this recipe uses tahini as the base instead of flour, that means these brownies are naturally gluten free. Just make sure your other ingredients are all certified gluten free if you have a gluten intolerance or allergy.

5. Can I substitute the maple syrup with something else?

Yes, honey works well as a 1:1 swap and will give these brownies an equally delicious flavor. Agave nectar may be a good option, too.

In a pinch, you can also just add an extra 1/4 c coconut sugar in this recipe and skip the maple syrup altogether.

6. Do I need to add the espresso powder? What does it do?

The espresso powder is completely optional, but I highly recommended it! It won’t make the brownies taste like coffee. Instead, the espresso powder deepens and intensifies the chocolate flavors in this brownie, giving them an overall richer taste.

7. Can I make these dairy free?

Absolutely, just swap the dark chocolate for a dairy free chocolate variety. Everything else in the recipe is already dairy free!

8. How do I know when the brownies are done baking?

These tahini brownies are ready when the top is puffed and firm to the touch, usually after baking for 20–25 minutes. Keep in mind that flourless brownies will firm up further on as they cool, so you don’t want to overbake them in the oven. A toothpick inserted in the center may still have a few crumbs on it, so only use it as a loose guideline for doneness.

9. How should I store these brownies?

Store the cooled brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the fridge for up to a week.

These brownies can also be frozen for up to 2 months. Just slice them first and stack them in layers separated with parchment paper.

10. Why are these brownies considered healthy?

Unlike traditional brownies, this recipe skips refined flour and uses wholesome ingredients like tahini, maple syrup, coconut sugar, and dark chocolate. These simple ingredients are delicious and contain so many great benefits, which makes these brownies a treat you can genuinely feel good about enjoying!

You can use regular granulated sugar, or replace the coconut sugar with more maple syrup! Enjoy 🙂
