Flying Dutchman Burger

This one’s for the vegetarians! The Flying Dutchman burger from In N Out stacks two cheeseburgers together and wraps them in caramelized onions. It’s delicious, and you’ll definitely want to make this viral burger recipe at home!

Ever heard of a Flying Dutchman burger? It’s a secret menu item at In N Out that stacks two cheeseburgers together, and wraps them in caramelized onions. Yup, there’s no bun. Yup, it’s just as delicious as it sounds.

What’s so great about this homemade burger recipe is that you don’t have to live near an In N Out in order to try it. You can make it yourself in just a few easy steps!

In N Out is plentiful near where I live, however I haven’t had one of their burgers in years. I don’t eat beef, but I refuse to be left out of what sounds like a truly awesome meal. So, I figured out how to make this delicious In N Out secret menu item at home, and I made it vegetarian! This recipe can easily be made vegan too, for all my vegan friends out there.

Vegan Meat Substitute

Because I don’t eat meat, I used a vegan ground beef substitute for this viral onion wrapped burger recipe. Impossible Beef is soooo good, and it works perfectly for this recipe. Here’s a link to the exact vegan beef substitute that I used. This 12 oz package yielded four burger patties, which I used for two burgers.

This was my first time using Impossible Beef, and the result was really good! This vegan beef substitute has a great umami flavor, and the “beef” sticks together great so you don’t have to worry about your burgers falling apart. 10/10 would use again.

In N Out Secret Spread

You don’t want to eat this vegan Flying Dutchman burger without In N Out’s burger spread. Not because the burger lacks flavor without it, but because the spread is SO good that you’ll be tempted to eat it all by itself. Making In N Out’s burger sauce at home is super easy. The main ingredients are:

  • caramelized onions

  • mayo

  • relish

  • sriracha

  • onion powder

  • garlic powder

  • soy sauce

You’ll start out by caramelizing your onions on the stove. Just chop up about 1/4 c of onions, and cook it on medium-low heat with 1 tbsp of butter for about 5-8 minutes. The onions will get soft and golden, but they should not burn.

Add the caramelized onions and all of the other ingredients together in a small bowl, and stir to combine. This sauce is SO good and you have to make it when you make this vegan In N Out burger at home!

Cooking The Burgers

To start making this vegetarian Flying Dutchman burger, of course you’ll want to start by cooking your burger! I’m a baker at heart and never used a vegan beef substitute before, but if I can do this, so can you. Making this burger at home is super easy.

Separate your Impossible Beef into four 3oz patties, and flatten them slightly with your fingers. Sprinkle both sides of the patties with salt and pepper.

Now, drizzle a few tablespoons of avocado oil in a cast iron skillet and turn the heat to medium-high. Cook the patties for 2-3 minutes on each side. Use a spatula to lightly flatten the patties as they cook, since we want them to be a bit flat.

After the patties are cooked, remove them from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels. Place one slice of sharp cheddar cheese on two of the cooked patties.

COOKING THE ONIONS

Now it’s time to make our caramelized onion buns! Turn the stove down to medium-low heat, and add four thick slices of yellow onions. Sprinkle the top of the onions with a bit of salt and sugar.

Cook the onions for two minutes on both sides. The onions will be soft and golden on the outside. Place one slice of sharp cheddar cheese on two of the cooked caramelized onions.

Assembling the burger

The moment of truth…now it’s time to put the burgers together! Here’s the order of operations:

  • Place the cheese burger patties on top of the plain caramelized onions

  • Stack the plain burger patties on top of the cheese burger patties

  • Flip the cheese onions over on tops, forming a burger

Enjoy with lots of burger spread!!
