WHY I MADE THIS HEALTHY TWIX BAR RECIPE

I don’t have to tell you guys this, but you already know how much I love chocolate bars! When I travel, one of my favorite things to do is visit local grocery stores and try the chocolate bars that we don’t have here in the States. Store bought chocolate bars are definitely a treat, which is why I love to make healthier versions of them at home!

These Healthy Twix Bars are a delicious and more nutritious way to enjoy one of life’s greatest candy bars. These easy homemade Twix bars are made with wholesome ingredients like almond flour, maple syrup, and coconut oil, which makes this treat a bit better than the one you buy in stores.

You guys LOVED my Salted Dark Chocolate Kit Kat Bars recipe so much that it’s quickly become one of my most popular blog posts of the season. And so many of you asked for a Twix version, so here it is!

Each one of these crunchy Twix cookie bars is covered in a healthier caramel sauce, then dipped in a dark chocolate coating and sprinkled with a bit of sea salt. The combination of dark chocolate and sea salt in this recipe really takes these healthy Twix bars to the next level.

GLUTEN FREE TWIX BAR KEY INGREDIENTS

The full ingredients list for these DIY Twix bars is in the recipe card below, but here is an overview:

Shortbread Cookies

  • Almond flour: The base of our crunchy, gluten free Twix shortbread cookies. Almond flour is so versatile and great for gluten free baking. I haven’t tested this recipe using traditional flour or gluten free flour, but if you give that a try let me know how it turns out!
  • Maple syrup: Adds just a touch of sweetness, and more importantly moisture, to our cookie dough.
  • Coconut oil: Gives our cookies the same crunch and snap that makes traditional Twix bars so good!

Caramel Filling

  • Almond butter: Lots of healthy caramel recipes call for blending dates together, but personally I like the texture and taste that you get from almond butter and maple syrup instead. It tastes more like caramel, and less “fruity”, which is the taste that I get from too many dates. Make sure to use a jar of almond butter that is well stirred, and ideally has been sitting at room temperature for a while so that it’s super drippy and not dry.
  • Maple syrup: For yummy sweetness!
  • Coconut oil: Helps to thin out the caramel so it’s not super thick.
  • Vanilla: Flavor city.

Chocolate Coating

  • Dark Chocolate Chips: I used 72% Dark Chocolate Chips for this recipe, but you can use milk chocolate, bittersweet chocolate, or refined sugar free chocolate chips, whatever you prefer!
  • Coconut oil: Helps the chocolate melt and gives it a smooth, even consistency.

HOW LONG DO THESE TWIX BARS TAKE TO MAKE?

You’re just a few easy steps away from making these simple gluten free Twix bars at home:

  • Making the Twix shortbread cookies: 10 minutes
  • Baking the cookies: 15 minutes
  • Preparing the caramel filling: 10 minutes
  • Preparing the chocolate coating: 10 minutes
  • Dipping the Twix bars: 20 minutes

In total, this homemade classic Twix bar recipe will only take about an hour to make, not including rest time.

HOW TO STORE THESE CLASSIC TWIX BARS?

Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to a week.

CHOCOLATE TWIX BARS FAQ

1. What type of chocolate works best for coating?
Dark chocolate gives this chocolate bars that classic Twix flavor along with a rich, slightly bitter note. However, you can use milk chocolate if you prefer a sweeter bar. Refined sugar-free chocolate chips work perfectly, too!

2. How long do these last in the fridge?
These homemade Twix bars keep well for up to a week in the fridge or up to a month in the freezer. Just make sure they’re stored in an airtight container to prevent moisture from softening the shortbread.

3. Are these vegan or dairy-free?
They can be! Just make sure to use dairy free dark chocolate chips. The rest of the recipe is naturally vegan-friendly.

4. Why did my shortbread cookies crack or crumble?
Make sure you remove them from the oven when the edges are lightly golden brown. If they overcook in the oven, then the shortbread cookies might crack when you try to slice them into bars.

5. How do I get a smooth coating on the bars?
Make sure the dark chocolate is fully smooth before dipping. Use a fork to dip and tap off any excess coating. If it starts to thicken, gently rewarm it in the microwave or over a double boiler.

These are good, & while reminiscent of Twix in appearance & structure, I find they taste more like a chocolate coconut bar. Next time, I’m going to use refined coconut oil to eliminate the overpowering coconut taste. I’ll definitely make these again, but will modify to suit my taste. Thank you for providing me with a starting point with these delicious treats.

Hi, I want to try and make this but I don’t like the coconut oil taste. Can I substitute a neutral smelling (to me) oil, like olive oil?

Hi! I haven’t tried it with olive oil, but you can give it a try.
